Selecting Safe Gaps
Scanning for Hazards
When you’re learning to drive, it might seem as though driving is all about steering, changing gears, using the indicators and knowing the road rules. While these are important, to stay safe you also need to be able to detect and react to any hazards that might arise when you are driving.

A hazard is any possible danger that might lead to a crash. This includes, cyclists, pedestrians crossing the road, animals, roadworks, broken-down vehicles and other cars stopping ahead of you or entering from side roads. There are many hazards and to remain safe, you need to know how to recognise and respond to them.

These interactive hazard scenarios have been developed to highlight the types of hazards that exist and assist you in developing your hazard perception skills.
